DINING ROOMS

Eating should be a social activity and not just a re-fuelling process. The act of eating should be an enjoyable experience giving opportunity to socialise with family or friends. A relaxing occasion a pleasant atmosphere.

The traditional “formal” dining room has lost popularity just as the kitchen has an ever-increasing positive focus. Unless you formally entertain on a regular basis a formal room designated purely for dining will be a waste of room receiving only occasional usage.

Today’s dining room is a multi-functional space located ideally adjacent to the kitchen, in order to move food with ease.

A dining room has to be accessible throughout the day, with differing emphasis being placed on different meals with breakfast, lunch or the evening meal being the family focus.
The lighting of the room is essential, natural daylight gives a warm welcoming airy feel, ideal for breakfast and lunch.

Traditionally a low light centrally located would reinforce the table as the focus of the room. Today modern lighting directed at the table offers the same result.

Locating the dining room on the western side of the house allows the evening sunlight to be filtered into the room.
The dining room doubles as a study, a game room, an office and a playroom. In fact it can take on variety of roles during the evolution of a family unit.

When an eating room is part of the kitchen it may require isolation. The provision of waist high kitchen or storage units will define the areas and provide storage and worktop facilities at the same time.
